I find the comparison of NEPHKIDS and http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/ absolutely fascinating! The story of the origins of the group is very moving http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/d_01_001.htm . Diabetes is a much more common disease than pediatric kidney disease - seven million Americans plus have it therefore one of the differences is a matter of scale. We have two physician moderators on NEPHKIDS (maybe 2.5 if you count my input!) whereas there are 22 professionals (10 physicians) involved full time in answering questions on

and 12 involved part time (including 5 physicians).

The questions are anonymous on http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/ so the sense of community generated (which is considerable!) is all based on knowing something about the people answering the questions, not the people posing them in the first place. There is no opportunity for parents to talk to each other about emotional and personal issues as there is on NEPHKIDS. But the information provided to families through the site is outstanding!

So clearly there is a role for replicating the model of NEPHKIDS for chronic health problems of childhood less common than diabetes. Is anyone aware of another Email discussion group where that is being done? Any other thoughts?

Best regards. - Kim

Following up on the theme of cross fertilization among medical disciplines, I would like to initiate discussion of the NEPHKIDS Email discussion group moderated by Drs. Sue Conley and Melissa Gregory http://cnserver0.nkf.med.ualberta.ca/nephkids/ and whether subscribers feel that this is a model that should be replicated in other areas of medicine, or are aware of other groups that are already doing this sort of thing.

An outstanding site and a pioneer in this area is 'Children with Diabetes': http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/
Just the right professional touch at the right time. The service has many other commendable features.
